This used to be one of those questions that I half knew the answer to but didn’t want to look stupid by admitting I wasn’t sure. Now I realize that it is a very broad term that is changing all the time. The technology is fragmented and definitions vary. The idea of a Smart Home is that it provides comfort, security, energy savings and convenience and offers the added benefit of being able to control functions even when away from home. You can use your phone to close the garage door you left open, lock the front door or turn on the lights and music to welcome you home.
One simple definition of the Smart Home is a residence that has multiple appliances, lighting, heating, air conditioning, TVs, home entertainment audio and video systems, window and door operations, security and camera systems that are capable of communicating with each other and can be controlled remotely from any room in the house, as well as remotely from any location in the world by means of a phone or internet.
In addition to offering great convenience, a Smart Home can also be a green home and save you energy and money. Many of the devices that control lighting, HVAC and irrigation for example have built-in monitoring systems that calculate consumption thus enabling the homeowner to see exactly how much energy each device uses and make energy saving adjustments as necessary.
REFRIGERATORS DO MORE THAN KEEP FOOD COOL
The technology of new smart devices is changing all the time and is hard to keep up with. Smart refrigerators are now able to catalogue contents, suggest menus, make healthy eating recommendations and re-order regularly used food as it is used up. Everything except eat the food for you!
SMART IS HERE TO STAY
Houses are going to continue to get even smarter and we will experience a continuous learning curve as new innovations come on to the market. As homeowners we will have to assess which products will indeed make our lives easier and which can be ignored, for now. Teething troubles will be inevitable as old and new technology struggle to work together and it is essential that you have a strong and reliable wifi network if you want to fully enjoy the benefits of a Smart Home. But Smart Home technology is exciting and although there may be some frustrations ahead, It is going to change the way we live. Just think how comfortable we are now with our smartphones. We love them and would not want to live without them.
