I recently bought my first house in Lake Forest. I am single and not really into renovating and DIY so I chose a house that did not need much work. It had been freshly painted by the sellers and was pretty much move in ready. It never entered my head that there would be a problem with the paint.
I moved in and got the place all organized and then started noticing that the trim all over the house was peeling. It looked awful. The paint had a sort of rubbery feel and when I scraped it with my fingernail, the paint just came off. This was happening on all the trim. I didn’t know whether the problem was with the wood or what.
The helpful guy at my local hardware store told me the previous owners had obviously done a quick revamp but not prepared the surface properly. They had put cheap latex paint on top of oil paint and it didn’t stick properly. I was so pissed. I didn’t have the budget to get someone in to deal with it so I had to do it myself. I was forced to learn how to do it properly. The paint guy told me that if I didn’t do a good prep job, I would have the same issue again.
First I had to scrape the peeling paint off wherever it was loose. The latex had stuck in some places but not others. What a pain. I used a putty knife and that seemed to work. Then I had to sand the areas where the paint had stuck so I was not painting on top of the same surface again. I spent hours on my hands and knees! I then had to use 2 coats of primer and finally a good quality semi gloss paint. What a headache.
