Every year children suffer severe shocks and burns from sticking stuff into the slots of electrical outlets. Keys, pins, pens, toys, paperclips, you name it. Children are naturally curious creatures. You tell them not to do something; they want to do it more. With electricity, you don’t want to take any chances.
As a safer and more permanent alternative to covering your electrical outlets with plastic covers, you can install Tamper Resistant Receptacles.
TAMPER RESISTANT RECEPTACLES
They look just like ordinary outlets, but they are designed with a built in safety shutter that prevents foreign objects from being inserted. The shutters only open when a two bladed or grounded plug is inserted. TRRs cost little more than traditional electrical receptacles but bring peace of mind to parents and safety to children.
DO I HAVE TO PLUG IN DIFFERENTLY?
The slots on a TRR only open when equal pressure is applied in each slot. It is a little trickier to insert a plug but there is a knack. Make sure that the blades are straight as you insert the plug and push evenly. If the blades are bent or splayed, you will have difficulty inserting them into the slots.
CAN TRRS BE RETROFITTED?
A qualified electrician can easily replace regular receptacles with TRRs. No special modifications are required.
