Those shiny apples arranged so beautifully in the produce section look so tempting. The reason they look so good is that they are wearing a layer of wax. Wax is used on many fruits and vegetables to protect them from bruising in transit, help them retain moisture and increase their shelf life. Even organic fruits and vegetables are often waxed. Although the wax used is food grade, you may prefer to remove it before eating. Mix a little baking soda and lemon juice in warm water and scrub gently using a vegetable brush to remove the waxy coating.
