It is essential to sort and declutter before you begin a remodel so your new space is only full of things you love. But where to begin?
There is no one right way to approach a huge sort out, but here are 5 simple strategies to get you going:
1. PICK A DRAWER
To start with, you want to choose a task that can be successfully and easily completed. It is impossible, and exhausting to do everything at once and failure never feels good. Select one drawer in your home. Put on some nice music, allow yourself plenty of time and have fun going through the contents. Savor any pleasurable memories the items bring up in you. If the memories are bad ones, then even more reason to get rid of the stuff that reminds you of unpleasant events.
2. FILL ONE TRASH BAG
Take one trash bag and see how quickly you can fill it.
3. FILL ONE GOODWILL BAG
Fill one trash bag with clothing and items for Goodwill that you know must definitely go. Drop the bag off as soon as you can. Out of sight is out of mind.
4. BIRDS OF A FEATHER
As you start sorting, an easy and effective organizing tip is to group like things together and keep them in one place. Designate specific areas for items such as medications, toiletries, candles, batteries or stationary and if stuff overflows those areas, then something has to go.
5. DON’T BE A PERFECTIONIST
When I tackle my closet or my garage, I always want it to be perfect, with an ideal place for everything, but it’s a somewhat unrealistic goal. Even when you have finished reorganizing, your space is not going to look like an ad for ideal home, carefully staged by stylists and marketers for a non-existent homeowner. When you have finished, your space should be clean, with frequently used items tidy and accessible. As long as you know where things are and can find them easily, you have achieved success.
