5 FAVORITE KITCHEN TRENDS THAT NEVER SEEM TO DATE

1. THE ALL WHITE KITCHEN

When planning a kitchen remodel, part of the fun is browsing photos and feeling inspired by other people’s kitchen renovations and kitchen remodel ideas. Colors come and go but the white kitchen is a staple that always looks fresh and clean. It will never go out of style. It creates an illusion of space and is therefore recommended in smaller kitchens. White makes a perfect backdrop for colored accessories to pop against. You can change up the color of your accessories depending on the season. Add vases, flowers, plants, jars or fruit. The only question with a white kitchen is what shade of white are you going to choose? I recently went with a friend who is doing a white kitchen to choose tiles. Simple you would have thought. Not at all. Differences are subtle but can make a difference. If in doubt, consult an experienced kitchen interior designer to help with your selections.

2. SUBWAY TILES

Subway tiles are so called because they were used to line New York’s first subway tunnels back in the 1900s. Classic subway tiles are white, 3 inch by 6 inch rectangles. They are an iconic part of American design and are still popular in kitchens and bathrooms. A simple but always successful kitchen remodel idea. They work well in kitchens as a back splash. Clean and classy.

3. LARGE OVERHANGS

Islands are the centerpiece of many kitchens. They are the gathering place as well as the main prep area. Large overhangs mean that guests can comfortably sit and put their knees underneath. Obviously you have to have enough space to accommodate this, but if you do, then don’t skimp. I have a very large granite island that separates the kitchen from the great room. I have 4 stools at the counter and they are always the first to be filled as guests arrive. It is also comfortable to eat at the counter, since the knees are fully accommodated!

4. KEEP IN STYLE

It doesn’t matter how exciting a new kitchen trend or kitchen remodel idea is, if it doesn’t go with the style of your home, it will not work. Follow the kitchen trend of keeping your decor choices in line with the architecture and feel of your home. If you have a more traditional home, a super modern, sleek kitchen may seem out of place. The finishes and lighting fixtures can pull the look together and integrate the kitchen into the rest of the home.

5. UNIVERSAL DESIGN

If you apply the principles of Universal Design to your remodel, the kitchen will be functional and accessible for all age ranges, making for easy living for everyone. Smart ergonomics mean convenience for young or old and for all future buyers. If you are a baby boomer doing a kitchen remodel, incorporating universal design means your kitchen will still be functional in the years to come when you may be less mobile. For example, think of installing a wall oven so you don’t have to bend down so low. Add pull out drawers so the contents are easier to see. Make sure kitchen traffic can flow well without any bottlenecks. These are great kitchen remodel ideas that will work for everyone.
