THE 3 BOX APPROACH TO DECLUTTERING

SPARK JOY

According to the principles of Feng Shui, every item that surrounds you in your home should spark joy. That is a lovely thought and as I look around my office I realize that a lot of things do, particularly the art on the walls.  But then my eye falls upon the old monitor and even older PC tower that is gathering dust on the floor. It has its place and is not in the way, but I haven’t touched it in years. I use a laptop for everything. To improve the free flow of energy in my workspace, it has to go. This is the sort of assessment you need to do before remodeling of any kind begins.

Get 3 big boxes or bags and label them:

1. STAY

2. GO

3. I DON’T KNOW

Have a trash bag ready for anything that is going straight into the garbage. As you start sorting, you have only three options. Make your decisions quickly and instinctively.

1. STAY

Put in this box the items that you love and that inspire a good feeling in you. Also put in things that are useful. And by useful, I mean useful now.  Don’t hoard things “just in case.”  If you haven’t used them in years, you are unlikely to in the future.

2. GO

In the GO box put anything that you are sure you do not want to keep.  You can donate these items to charity or you can hold a garage sale. Nothing that goes in this box is coming back into your home. You don't want your new décor to be spoiled by excess and unnecessary knick-knacks and gadgets.

If there is an item that you don’t like but was perhaps given to you by a friend or loved one, take a couple of seconds to acknowledge the love that was behind the gift, then immediately put it in the GO box. Don’t hesitate. If you don't like it now, you are not going to love it later.

3. I DON’T KNOW

Having this box will make your decisions much more decisive. If you are really not sure what to do with an item, then by all means put it in here. You will have to find a time to go through this box later, but it gives you a reprieve. Put the date on the box and store it out of sight. Don’t look in it until your remodel is finished and all your delight-inspiring possessions have a new place.  I can almost guarantee that I DON’T KNOW will change to GO.
