Whenever I bake a cake, I can’t wait to get to the icing. When I am renovating, I can’t wait to get to the décor. But experience and many errors have taught me that you can’t skimp on the planning. The best kitchen remodel ideas will go awry unless they are carefully thought through.
Before you even start looking at pictures, jot down your answers to these questions
Consider where you and your family are at right now and how that may change in the next five years. If your boys are turning into teenagers, you will need as large a fridge as possible. If your children are about to head off to college, you may not need that double oven.
Knowing why you want to do a kitchen remodel will help you prioritize. Do you want more light, more storage, more preparation areas, a more efficient workflow? You may have to make some compromises if you are on a tight budget, but this way you will make sure your new kitchen fulfills your main wishes.
Your kitchen may need a complete overhaul but if there is anything that is reusable, this can really cut down costs. Go around your present kitchen and make a list of what you are happy with and what you want to change. Do all your appliances need renewing? Would simply replacing the doors on the existing cabinets achieve the effect you want?
Make a list of all the items that are essential to you in your new kitchen remodel. Which kitchen remodel ideas are most important to you? Do you want sliding drawers to house your pots and pans? Do you want a double sink? Must you have an icemaker in your refrigerator?
If you have a small kitchen, you may not have enough room for a seating area. If you are a family and you have the space, a comfortable place where you can eat together on a daily basis is worth investing in. Think about the additional uses for this area other than eating such as homework, projects, sewing and study. This will help determine what lighting is most suitable.
Are you drawn to country or contemporary? Mediterranean or French? Cozy or coastal? Gather images that depict your dream kitchen remodel and try and analyze which specific details in the pictures you love. The materials you choose can have a huge effect on your budget, but there are economical ways to still achieve the look and feel you want.
It doesn’t matter how much you try and herd friends into other areas of your home, everyone loves hanging out in the kitchen. Most people these days prefer an open plan kitchen and an island is perfect as a focal point and as an area for guests to congregate around. If you are a frequent entertainer, you might want to add a bar setup complete with wine cooler and built in icemaker.
Particularly if you are in an older home, you may need upgrades to handle new appliances or extra outlets. Make sure you find out whether you need this before your renovation begins. It will affect your budget and be a major headache if you only discover this once your appliances have been delivered.
Fantasizing is part of the fun of of a kitchen remodel. Initially you may feel want to indulge every kitchen remodel idea on the internet. but try and stay within the realms of realism. If you didn’t really love cooking before the kitchen renovation, you are not suddenly going to turn into an international chef overnight.
Once you have set a budget goal, add a good buffer amount to cover extra work that may occur once the renovation begins. Trust me, you will need it.
