BEST MATERIALS FOR A LOW MAINTENANCE SHOWER

Have you ever actually met anyone who enjoys cleaning the shower? They may be as rare as the Northern hairy-nosed wombat, a cute critter considered one of the rarest large mammals in the world! Showers are in constant use, frequently by several people, several times a day. They are damp most of the time and thus a breeding ground for bacteria, mold and mildew. There is no avoiding this cleaning job, unless you have a housekeeper to do it for you, so how can you at least make it less of a chore? These practical bathroom remodel ideas will simplify the task.

HAVE A GOOD VENT

Having a good vent is hardly an innovative bathroom remodel idea and it may not seem the obvious first choice for a low maintenance shower, but it will eliminate the moisture as quickly as possible. Buy the best and quietest fan you can afford. There is nothing worse than drying yourself to the strains of a jumbo jet taking off. If the fan is noisy, you’ll be reluctant to turn it on. A timer is a good idea so you don’t have to worry about remembering to turn it off.

GROUT IS OUT

Tiles can look very sleek and there are so many beautiful designs to choose from, but if you want to reduce your cleaning time, then grout is out. Bathroom remodel ideas such as choosing a solid surface wall panel will save you hours of elbow grease. If you still love tile and are not prepared to eliminate grout lines entirely, then at least reduce their thickness and frequency by choosing larger tiles.

STAY SOLID

Acrylic is one of the most durable and easy to maintain alternatives to ceramic and stone tile. It is affordable bathroom remodel idea and on just about any budget. It is durable and both scratch and stain resistant since it is non porous. Acrylic can mimic travertine, granite, and tile and comes in an array of colors and textures, so does not limit your creativity.

If you prefer the more genuine look of natural stone but still want to keep out the grout, ForzaStone offers an excellent solution. ForzaStone panels are high quality natural stone, backed with reinforced composite and metal alloy laminates. Forza means strength in Italian and they are indeed strong and durable. The panels are large, lightweight and waterproof offering luxurious, groutless design without sacrificing the stunning beauty that real travertine, marble and onyx can offer.

GO DOORLESS

Do you have enough space to place your shower in a wet zone that will contain the water so you can eliminate the door entirely? Going doorless makes sense as a bathroom trend. It will give you one less surface to clean. Unless you feel comfortable showering in the middle of the bathroom, you’ll probably want to strategically place the shower around a corner so there is some screening.

GO FRAMELESS

If you prefer to have a door, then you will probably want glass despite the fact that it is not the easiest surface to clean. The key to low maintenance is eliminating corners where dirt can lurk. Aluminum frames around glass doors are magnets for gunk. A frameless glass door is the best bathroom remodel idea to give you a smooth surface to squeegee clean in seconds.

PUT ON A COAT

There are a number of options for adding a coating to the glass to help repel water and scum. This is a particularly good idea if you live in a hard water area.
